Ascension Catholic pupil excels at science fair

BEAVERCREEK — A seventh-grade student of Ascension Catholic School received a superior rating at State Science Day hosted by Ohio State University.

More than 1,000 students in grades seven to 12, from nearly 300 schools in Ohio, traveled to Columbus to show their science projects May 8. More than 100 scholarships were awarded and valued at more than $2.5 million.

Kristen Wehner, 13, of Beavercreek, received a superior rating for her project in microbiology. Her project consisted of growing bacteria from doorknobs in petri dishes. Wehner kept the bacteria at room temperature in moist and dry environments and photographed the growth each night for a week.

“It was fun watching it grow, it was pretty gross,” Wehner said.

In the end, Wehner found that being in a moist or dry environment was inconclusive in advancing growth. The most important factor was how often the doorknob was used.

Ann Wehner, mother of four, said she is proud of her daughter’s accomplishment.

Kristen Wehner said she wants to be a surgeon when she grows up and plans to attend either Carroll or Beavercreek High School.
