The Atrium Family YMCA Children’s Center took a giant leap toward becoming a recognizable center.

On Tuesday, Aug. 18, in front of more than 100 children— some crying, some sleeping, others wide awake and applauding — Donna Keith, director of childcare, accepted the One-Star Step Up To Quality Award from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Keith said the award shows the YMCA center provides a “quality program.”

Terrie Hare, chief of the Ohio Bureau of Child Care and Development, said the center exceeds the state’s licensing standards. She applauded the center for its “outstanding commitment” to children and early learning.

Participating programs can earn a one-, two-, or three-star rating by meeting an extensive list of quality benchmarks, Keith said.

Experts say these benchmarks improve the growth and development potential of children. Keith said the rating system — much like a hotel or restaurant — provides consumers a grade card for selecting the appropriate business.

The Atrium site is the fourth Middletown center to earn a one-star rating, joining the Middletown Area Family YMCA Children’s Center at Miami University Middletown, Abilities First, and the Middletown location of Butler County Head Start.
