Barleycorn’s restaurant closes

The Barleycorn’s restaurant and bar at 6204 Wilmington Pike has been sold, and it closed for business Saturday, its owners said Sunday.

A new establishment called Murphy’s Irish Pub & Grill will open in early May in the same space, according to Scott Anderson, owner of the new pub. The restaurant will remain closed for about a week and a half while undergoing an “extensive” renovation, and is projected to open on or near May 7, Anderson said.

In an email to the Dayton Daily News, Barleycorn’s operations manager Joe Heil said the new owners’ assurances that they will retain the restaurant’s employees and manager was “paramount in our decision to sell.”

In an interview Sunday at the restaurant, Anderson confirmed that Murphy’s will retain the former Barleycorn’s staff. “We look forward to welcoming everybody back,” he said. Anderson’s wife Candy will manage the Irish-themed pub, he said.

Rick Heil, managing partner of Barleycorn’s who oversaw the Sugarcreek Twp. location, has decided to return to northern Kentucky, Joe Heil said. The Barleycorn’s chain, which was founded in 1976, operates three other restaurants in northern Kentucky, which will remain open, the owners said. The Dayton-area location opened in 2007.

“This was not an easy decision, but was one made with much thought and consideration for our Barleycorn’s team,” the Barleycorn’s owners said on the restaurant’s Facebook page.
