Lightning struck the roof of the three-floor, 22-unit building, causing the fire.
Smith said no damage estimate has been determined but officials are working with the property management and tenants to set a dollar loss. That will likely be available later this week.
No one was injured in the blaze.
Smith said the Red Cross was at the scene last night helping those who lived in the building. The management of the apartment complex also was helping to relocate those who lost their homes. He said some stayed with family members and some were placed in hotels.
“Everyone has been dealt with,” Smith said.
