BEAVERCREEK — Chris Williams could easily be mistaken for a student in the halls of Beavercreek High School.
To guard against such cases of mistaken identity, the first-year history teacher and Beavercreek graduate says he’ll wear a dress shirt and tie everyday.
“This is just an awesome opportunity,” Williams said of his return to the sprawling high school as an instructor. “Especially here in Beavercreek. It couldn’t be better.”
Williams discovered a passion for history in John Kochensparger’s and other teachers’ classes at the high school.
“I had awesome teachers,” he said.
Now the Ohio State grad’s ambition is to shake the malaise off current high schoolers and make social studies interesting the way his teachers did for him. “It’s hard to keep students motivated. But history is one subject that, everything I tell them, its not a theory, it really happened.”
Williams spent time substitute teaching at Beavercreek before getting a full-time position. Even with the post he won’t have a classroom to call home. Like many new teachers his supplies will occupy a cart to wheel from room to room this year.
But that doesn’t upset Williams. He’s happy to be back in those familiar halls, this time to give something back to the place and people who shaped him.
“I had an awesome high school experience. I wouldn’t change a thing,” he said. “It’s going to be a little weird, being on the other side, but I’m excited to give back to my community.”
