Beavercreek school district buildings getting upgrades

Everything from plumbing to plaster work in progress

BEAVERCREEK — Renovations are ongoing at several Beavercreek school district buildings and officials are a step closer to breaking ground on an elementary and middle school at the corner of Dayton-Xenia and Ankeney roads.

The Beavercreek Township Zoning Commission recently voted 3-0 to approve the district’s specific site plan.

The plan includes an elementary school and middle school that share a kitchen and mechanical facilities, street entrance and bus loop, but otherwise are separate schools.

School district representatives met with members of the zoning commission and county agencies in May and June to refine the site plan.

During the presentation earlier this month, district officials provided details regarding the building, grading and drainage plans, heating and cooling systems, traffic flow and impact considerations, and landscape and lighting concerns.

“We are pleased that the zoning commission approved our plan at its first hearing, and are eager to share it with the trustees and county officials,” said Peg Arnold, president of the Beavercreek Board of Education.

School officials will meet with the Beavercreek Township Trustees later this month and will present to the Greene County Regional Planning and Coordinating Commission on July 27. Approvals from both agencies are needed before construction can begin.

Renovations

• Heating, ventilation and air conditioning upgrades are under way at Fairbrook, Main and Parkwood elementaries, as are upgrades to electric service, lighting, plumbing and ceilings. Crews are replacing the 1966-era windows at Parkwood. Main will get new windows. Masonry repairs are in progress at all three buildings.

• At Shaw and Valley elementaries, asbestos abatement is under way in preparation for the buildings’ new HVAC systems, which will be installed in 2011. Workers also are repairing the roofs.

• Plaster, stonework, roofing and masonry repairs have begun at Main Auditorium, and crews removed existing seating and floor coverings in preparation for new ones. Electrical upgrades, lighting repairs, a new sound system and windows, and new HVAC also are planned.

• At Beavercreek High School, access roads and portions of parking lots have been excavated and will be repaved.

• Renovations to Ankeney Middle School will happen in 2011. Ferguson Middle School renovations, which are more extensive, will take place from 2011-13.
