Bellbrook Boomer Cafe offers activities, company for seniors

Events are free and there are no membership fees

BELLBROOK — Eight months after the Bellbrook Boomer Cafe, a part-time activity center for area seniors ages 50 and older, sprang into existence, it is still seeking name recognition and more participants.

Sponsored by the Greene County Council on Aging in partnership with the Bellbrook-Sugarcreek schools, the group occupies space in the former library of the Sugarcreek Education Center, 3757 Upper Bellbrook Road.

Its latest upcoming venture is starting a monthly Movie Nite, said Carol Kunze, a care manager with the GCCA who helps oversee the group. The first movie, “The Blind Side,” starring Academy Award-winning actress Sandra Bullock, will at 7 p.m. today at the center. Admission is free and there will be free popcorn and drinks, she said.

The center is open during events only, so hours vary daily, Kunze said. There are no membership fees and all events are free.

Friday night euchre, one of the more popular events, runs from 7 to 10 p.m., except on home football game nights. Then it is 6 to 9 p.m., to avoid parking problems.

“We try to respond to what people want for their activities,” Kunze said. They have Wii gaming equipment and hope to set up Wii bowling tournaments.

The center is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Mondays for activities, including a creative art class with card-making and fabric art. Every third Monday there is a noon lunch carry-in.

Bill Holland, and his wife, Nancy Mullins, of Bellbrook, both retired, enjoy the creative art class and carry-in lunches. Holland said he never realized he had a creative bent. “It’s a fantastic growing experience,” he said. “You see new things.” The center is a place to go “to be with people and not be alone.”

Sugarcreek Twp. widow Lois Carter gives individual computer instruction and leads the Monday arts program. “I just love sharing,” she said.

The center is open from 1 to 4 p.m. the second and fourth Thursdays, and at 10 a.m. Fridays for a chair yoga class.

Free health screenings for blood pressure and blood sugar are available. A monthly newsletter carries a schedule of upcoming events. For information, call Kunze at (937) 376-5486.
