Boy killed in Miami Twp. murder-suicide laid to rest

A 6-year-old boy shot and killed by his mother’s boyfriend is being laid to rest today.

Miami Twp. police say Carter Clemons died when 33-year-old Jovonie McClendon shot him and his mother, 27-year-old Di’Eshia Patterson, and then went on Facebook live and shot himself.

Services for Carter began at 10 a.m. at the Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church on Germantown Pike. He will be laid to rest at West Memory Gardens.

People attending the services called this a community tragedy, as well as a tragedy for the boy’s family and parents.

Carter died Feb. 1 at his mother’s home on Sagebrook Drive.

Police were called to the apartment after McClendon called 911, saying he’d shot his girlfriend and her child.

The Army veteran then told dispatchers he was going to shoot himself, which he did while showing it on Facebook live.

Crews discovered Patterson still breathing, but her son died at the scene.

Hundreds of friends and family came to honor Carter today and a small local motorcycle group, One More Ride, is donating services to take Carter’s body from the church to the cemetery.

“There’s so many people, so many kids that are up against the wall every day. They never catch a break,” said Robert Ayen of One More Ride. “The families when this happens are in crisis. We all know that, but you can kind of brighten them, just for a moment, just for a day, to alleviate some of the family’s pain.”
