Church bell tower struck by lightning

Pastor thankful no fires started, repairs underway.

DAYTON — An area church pastor is thankful his church didn’t catch fire following an early morning lightning strike Wednesday.

Pastor Jesse Rubio, of the Fountains of Living Waters church at 1515 Huffman Ave. said lightning struck the bell tower of the building, and falling brick damaged the children's church and punctured two large holes in the roof.

“There were a lot of bricks scattered all over,” Rubio said. “There’s a lot of damage and a fire almost started, but thank God it didn’t.”

Rubio was first notified of the strike at approximately 8:30 a.m. by a neighbor and police.

Rubio thinks the strike occurred at about 5 a.m. Wednesday, when a strong line of storms passed through the Miami Valley.

“We’re having baptismal (ceremonies) this weekend, and my first thought was hoping there wasn’t a lot of structure damage so we can continue,” Rubio said.

His insurance company has been notified and the effort to repair the church already is underway by his brother, Victor, who is a roof contractor.
