Churches hope to raise $20K for Haiti

Several local gospel choirs combine in song at Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist for relief effort.

JEFFERSON TWP. — The combined gospel choirs of several local churches raised the rafters at Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church Sunday night, Jan. 31, as ministers called upon hundreds of the faithful to donate money to relieve the desperate conditions that have followed the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti.

Mt. Carmel’s pastor, Rev. Chad White, said the churches hoped to raise $20,000 for food and supplies for Haiti. White is to be one of about 15 ministers who plan to join missionary Vera Boudreaux on a trip to the ravaged island as soon as air travel is available.

“We will be there hands-on, feeding and meeting the needs of the people,” White said.

Sunday’s event was part of a multi-church Fifth Sunday Fellowship, which uses the emblem, “Many Christians, One Cross.” R&B singer Shirley Murdock was special musical guest.

Boudreaux, 86, of the San Francisco Bay area, has been a missionary in Haiti for 41 years. She was last there in November, and was present during the 2008 hurricane.

“Haiti is in total darkness now,” she said. “We who serve God are the light of the world, and we’ve got to bring some light to Haiti.”
