Cows rescued from icy pond

TURTLECREEK TWP. — Firefighters used a chainsaw and other tools today, Feb. 24, to free two cows from a frozen pond.

Turtlecreek Twp. firefighters responded shortly before noon to a pond at a residence in the 3300 block of Hatfield Road. Two cows, one a 4-H project, were let out of an enclosure on the property then became stuck in two separate locations in a small pond.

Firefighters cut the ice and made a path for the cows to walk out. Homeowner Rick Frommling, whose son owns the bovines Bucky and Charlie, assisted by using a rope, lassoing the large farm animals and pulling them to safety. Both animals were out of the water by 12:25 p.m.

Turtlecreek Twp. Fire Chief Steve Flint said that his department has responded to several animal-in-ice rescues this season — Two cows, two deer and two dogs, so far. All have been successful, Flint added.

After escorting the wet cows to the barn, Frommling said he didn’t know how long the pair had been in the ice, adding that they will be checked out by a veterinarian.
