A ‘Dayton Strong’ community blood drive will be held Friday, Aug. 16.
Warped Wing and Drake’s Gym are sponsoring the event at Dayton Community Blood Center to show support for the victims of the Oregon District mass shooting and the downtown community.
The two businesses will provide refreshments for donors, including donuts and cookies from Evans Bakery, Esther Price chocolates, and coffee from Press Coffee Bar.
The event will be held from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the blood center, 349 S. Main St. Appointments to donate can be made online at www.DonorTime.com or call (937) 461-3220.
Everyone who registers to donate can enter raffles for a Warped Wing gift basket; four tickets to the Saturday, Aug. 17 Alebeast Summer Knockout 2019 sparring event; and a one-month Drake’s membership. Donors will also receive the “My Commitment Defines Me – I Donate Blood” T-shirt and a chance to win the YETI Adventure Package grand prize in the CBC Lifesaving Adventure campaign.
In the six days following the shooting, 1,708 people registered to donate whole blood, platelets and plasma with CBC, including 171 first-time donors, according to a release. The Aug. 9 “Dayton Strong” blood drive totaled 146 donors.
** PREVIOUS COVERAGE (August 4, 2019): Local hospitals had sufficient blood supplies to respond to the shooting in the Oregon District Sunday, but the Community Blood Center will be open today to accept donations to replenish the supply.
“We definitely know people will want to donate to support the community,” said Mark Pompilio, spokesman for Community Blood Center.

The Community Blood Center, 349 S. Main St., is open Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Saturday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Donate to the Dayton Foundation
The Dayton Foundation has created a fund to benefit families directly affected by the Oregon District shooting.
The Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund at the Dayton Foundation is accepting online credit-card gifts as well as checks by mail.
For online donations, the foundation will waive the credit card processing fee so that 100 percent of the contribution will be used to assist others.
“Our hearts go out to the victims and their families of this horrific event,” Mike Parks, president of The Dayton Foundation, said on the foundation’s web site. “Many people want to reach out and help our friends, families and neighbors in the aftermath of this incident. Individuals who contribute to the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund can be assured that their donations will be distributed safely and responsibly as we continue to work with local officials in the days ahead.”

Individuals interested in contributing to the fund may make a secure, online credit card donation here, or mail a check to The Dayton Foundation, 40 N. Contributions are fully tax deductible, foundation officials say.The Sunday morning deadly shooting attacks in the Oregon District left 10 dead, including the suspected shooter, and nearly 30 injured. Nine of those injured were still hospitalized as of this morning, Aug. 5.
