Demolition of ‘blighted property’ in Harrison Twp. underway

The demolition of the former La Quinta Inn on North Dixie Drive, which has been described by township officials as a “blighted property”, began Tuesday morning.

“This was a team effort to get us to this point of demolition of the property,” said Cathi Spaugy, development director for Harrison Twp.

In July last year, the Harrison Twp. Board of Trustees deemed the property dangerous with an emergency declaration giving the property owner seven days to come into compliance, according to township officials.

The owner of the property was deemed non-compliant and the process for funding the demolition began, township officials said.

The cost of the demolition is $290,845 with half of the funding coming from Community Development Block Grant funds and the remainder is funded by the township, officials said.

There are no immediate plans for redevelopment for the property, however the property is being included in the township’s revitalization plan for the North Dixie corridor, Spaugy said.
