Kettering City Council member Bruce Duke beat back a strong challenge from Patricia Cavanaugh in the race for the District 4 seat in Tuesday’s election.

With all 11 precincts reporting, unofficial results from the Montgomery County Board of Elections showed that Duke pulled in 1,017 votes to Cavanaugh’s 843.

Duke’s political experience not only included his time on council, and as vice-mayor, but also as an administrator for the Kettering Leadership Academy.

The city of Kettering formed the Kettering Leadership Academy to equip citizens with important knowledge and skills needed for civic leadership. It was created by Duke 17 years ago and city officials say it has helped many citizens advance their careers.

His call for fiscal responsibility and addressing citizen concerns over his more than 30 year career resonated with voters, although Cavanaugh proved to be a tough opponent.

She has served for more than 10 years as Kettering Neighborhood Watch coordinator, working closely with the Kettering Police. She touted her strong financial background as a CPA from 1984 until 2017 when she retired as a major part of her platform.
