‘My Favorite Muffin’ seeks to add two more Dayton-area locations

The My Favorite Muffin cafe and bakery in the Cross Pointe Center in Centerville has been serving up its specialty for nearly a quarter-century, and it soon might have some company in the Dayton area.

Brian Evans, franchise development director for the Deerfield, Illinois-based My Favorite Muffin chain, said the company is looking to add locations in the Dayton region, perhaps in the downtown Dayton area. The new stores may be a similar cafe-like concept that has worked since 1995 at Cross Pointe, or they might be a streamlined, smaller bakery concept that focuses less on sandwiches and lunch fare and has smaller square-footage requirements.

“I believe Dayton in general can hold at least two more stores,” Evans said. “We would be open to working with either the full cafe concept or the bakery concept,” which has proven successful in a trial run in Louisville.

Rich Kate, co-owner/operator of the Cross Pointe franchise store since 2008, operated a second My Favorite Muffin location on the first floor of the former Kettering Tower (now Stratacache Tower) in downtown Dayton until shutting it down in 2013 to focus on the Centerville operation.

A message left for Kate Wednesday morning was not immediately returned.

Evans said he is looking for a franchisee for the company’s Dayton-area expansion. The financial requirements for My Favorite Muffin franchisees are a minimum net worth of $500,000 and a minimum of $100,000 in liquid capital, the franchise director said.

In addition to downtown Dayton, the company would look for potential store sites in the University of Dayton area and in the Beavercreek/Kettering/Miamisburg areas, Evans said. 

“Anytime you can be around universities and hospitals, that’s a good thing,” Evans said. “In our stores, everything is made from scratch in-store, so we can accommodate larger orders.”

“We’re excited about that area, and we’re excited about our concept,” the franchise director said.
