UPDATE @ 7:38 a.m.:

Fire officials are investigating a fire that spread from a vacant house to the one next to it and endangered a health center early this morning, according to Dayton Fire Department District Chief Mike Fasnacht.

Fasnacht said that the fire was originally found by Dayton police around 3 a.m., who called for the fire department.

Fire crews arrived on scene to find a large, well-involved fire in a house which had spread to the neighboring house and endangered the East Dayton Health Center building on the other side.

Firefighters started by working to protect the health center.

However, Fasnacht said, fire crews ran into issues with the water supply, and had to bring in an additional supply from nearby Springfield Street.

The houses appeared to be vacant, Fasnacht said, as all entryways into the building were boarded up. There was no evidence of squatters, he said.

The fire is now out and an arson investigator is on scene, though Fasnacht said that the cause of the fire is still unknown.

However, he added, “No fire starts on its own.”

Fire crews are expected to be on scene for some time while they investigate and make certain that nobody is inside the house.

East Third Street will be closed while the investigation is going on.
