First gay wedding at Clark County court

Harlie Royce and Anna Greene, both of Springfield, were the first same-sex couple to obtain a marriage license in Clark County earlier this month, after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision overturning Ohio’s same-sex marriage ban.

The Springfield High School graduates were also the first same-sex couple to be married at the Clark County Municipal Court.

Judge Thomas Trempe performed the ceremony on Friday in front of a small gathering of family and friends.

Greene, 23, said she and Royce, 19, knew each other in school, but officially met through friends and began dating 14 months ago. They now share a home together in Springfield.

Greene said she cried when she found out about the Supreme Court’s decision legalizing gay marriage last month. Her new wife helped her wipe a few tears from her face during the ceremony Friday as well before declaring, “We did it!”

The couple plans to hold a larger, country-themed wedding in the future.
