Five from Centerville Troop 516 achieve rank of Eagle Scout

Five Boy Scouts — Brian L. Berger, Devin T. Burke, William F. Irwin, Brandon W. Letcher and Robert D. Peterson — from Troop 516 in Centerville achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in November at Southminster Presbyterian Church.

Brian L. Berger began his Scouting career as a first-grade Tiger Cub in Pack 299 at Driscoll Elementary School.

Berger’s Eagle Scout project was building two 20-foot-long foot bridges and repairing multiple wet lowland areas at Grant Nature Reserve.

The bridges serve to make hiking more comfortable and safe for visitors to the park.

Berger graduated from Centerville High School in 2009. He was a member of the National Honor Society and was a National Merit Semifinalist.

He participated in the jazz, concert and marching bands and he was a nine-year member of Centerville Destination Imagination.

He is attending the University of Dayton and pursuing a degree in chemical engineering.

Berger is the son of Lisa and Kevin Berger.

Devin T. Burke began his Scouting career in first grade as a Tiger Cub in Pack 148 at Cline Elementary School.

Burke said he has enjoyed camping, skiing, biking, caving as well as backpacking with his patrol at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.

His Eagle Scout project involved constructing a bridge, building benches and clearing pathways at Bill Yeck Park.

Burke, a senior at CHS, is involved in the Business Technology block program.

He plans to attend Wright State University or Sinclair Community College and major in business, with an emphasis in marketing or entrepreneurship.

Burke is the son of Vicki and William Burke.

William F. Irwin joined Scouting as a Tiger Cub in Pack 315 at Normandy Elementary School.

Irwin’s Eagle Scout project involved building dog-agility course obstacles for Oak Grove Park.

Irwin is a senior at CHS, where he is involved with the high school orchestra, Octagon Club and Engineering Technology block program.

He is a member of the National Honor Society and is active in the youth group at Southminster Presbyterian Church.

Irwin said he plans to study mechanical engineering at Ohio State or the University of Cincinnati.

He is the son of Darlene and Ken Irwin.

Brandon W. Letcher, like Burke, joined Scouting as a first-grade Tiger Cub in Pack 148 at Cline.

Letcher’s Eagle Scout project was to lead a group of boys in designing and building two mini-log cabins at the Centerville Primary Village South. The project took more than 338 man hours and should benefit about 700 students each year. Letcher, a senior at CHS, is involved with the marching band, winter drumline and basketball pep band.

He is active in his church youth group and volunteers at a women’s crisis center.

Letcher said he plans to study engineering at Ohio State or the University of Cincinnati. He is the son of Kim and Jeff Letcher.

Robert D. Peterson began Scouting in first grade as a Tiger Cub in Atlanta and continued in Pack 299 at Driscoll Elementary School.

Peterson’s Eagle Scout project involved building benches and landscaping an area at Primary Village North in Centerville, providing an observation, meeting and outdoor classroom area for the students. Peterson is a senior at CHS, and is a member of the National Honor Society. He has played in concert and symphonic orchestras, and Alternative Strings.

He plans to attend Ohio State and study biomedical engineering. Peterson is the son of Laura and West Peterson.
