Floral Fantasy takes root in Centerville

CENTERVILLE — For the first year, the seventh annual Floral Fantasy will be held in Centerville.

The event, which had been held in Kettering at the Christ United Methodist Church and then David’s United Church of Christ, will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at Epiphany Lutheran Church at 6430 Far Hills Ave.

Doors will open at 6:15 p.m., and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

The Floral Fantasy is sponsored by the Dayton Alumnae Club of Pi Beta Phi sorority, and raises money for sorority members at the University of Dayton who are in financial need.

The event includes local florists from Furst Florist, the Flower Shoppe and Sherwood Florist designing arrangements on stage and discussing their work.

Mark Brueninghaus of the Flower Shoppe said the designers have a theme each year for the show, but said he likes his to be a surprise.

He did offer a little hint, though: “It might be a little warmer than what it is around here,” he said.

Each florist will create six arrangements that will be given away as door prizes.

The Floral Fantasy will have also a raffle and a silent auction.

“This year they’ll do more holiday things, since it is closer to the holiday,” said club member Martha Boice, who was in Pi Beta Phi at Ohio Wesleyan University.

“We used to have it earlier in November.”

Raffle and silent auction items include baskets with Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter themes, as well as book baskets, theater tickets, gardening items, beauty products, restaurant gift certificates and more.

Marty Ebeling, who is in charge of the silent auction and raffle, said items are donated by members of the community.

“It’s just wonderful,” said Ebeling, another OWU alumna, of the event. “It is so amazing how it’s caught on — and it goes by fast.”

This year, the club also is helping to establish an endowed scholarship fund at UD, honoring Ebeling and Lois Ross for their work in starting the UD chapter.

Tickets for the event are available at $15 in advance, and $20 at the door.
