The man, identified as Ed Sisler, 48, died at Springfield Regional Medical Center at about 12:30 p.m. According to Clark County auditor's records, Sisler's address is in the 100 block of Thomaston Trail.
The man was "alive and breathing" when he was taken from the scene to the hospital, sheriff's Lt. Chris Clark said.
The Clark County Coroner's Office said the results of an autopsy won't be available for several weeks. Clark said the sheriff's office is investigating the case as a "non-natural death." Deputies are hoping to have a preliminary report as soon as Monday.
Sisler was fired in 2009 as Clark County Humane Society executive director and county dog warden after an investigation into employee misconduct and managerial deficiencies. Sisler was accused of theft, misuse of agency funds and wage theft.
He maintained his innocence and sued county leaders who released documents pertaining to his termination. A book, "Reckless Disregard," by L.D. Pennington, is based on Sisler's time at the humane society and subsequent firing.
