Former DDN editor, reporter is dead at 78

Laurence Saunders Newman Jr., who worked for 30 years as a reporter, copy editor, managing editor and columnist for the Dayton Daily News and Dayton Journal Herald, died Tuesday in Saco, Maine, after a long illness. He was 78.

He retired in 1991. He also spent 24 years in the Navy Reserve, attaining the rank of commander before retiring in 1988, according to his obituary in the Bar Harbor (Maine) Times.

Mr. Newman is survived by children Tracy Carroll of Scarborough; Arlee Newman of Springfield, Va.; Patty Robey of Albuquerque, N.M.; Bill Newman of Essex Junction, Vt.; and Tyler Newman Kane of Cumberland.

He is also survived by his first wife of 37 years, Judith Newman of Cape Elizabeth; a brother, Jarvis Newman of Southwest Harbor; and a sister, Janet Cutliffe of Londonderry, N.H.
