Germantown Lions Club backs local, state and international charities

The Germantown Lions recently contributed more than $16,000 to various local, state and international charities.

“Our motto for Lions International is ‘We Serve’ and we take that very seriously,” said Glen Bowman of the club.

“It’s not just a slogan but a way of life.”

Bowman said the club serves the needs of the local community but also supports wide-ranging international efforts.

Beneficiaries include Pilot Dogs for the Blind, Germantown Rescue Squad, Germantown Fire Department, West Central Ohio Eye Bank, Ohio Lions Foundation, International Relations Through Lionism, Lions Club International Foundation, and the Lions Club International Sightfirst Campaign II.

The Valley View Athletic Boosters received a donation earmarked to help pay for the artificial turf at James Barker Field. The Germantown Lions supplied also monetary awards for the Valley View Science Fair competition and a donation to the Valley View High School choir.

Other beneficiaries included the Montgomery Rehab and Rescue, a fire and rescue support unit operated by Robert and Evon Colucci of Farmersville, Echoing Hills Village, Clovernook Center for the Blind in Cincinnati and the local Community Action Mission Program.

In addition, the Germantown Lions presented Christmas gift bags to all the residents of the Friendly Nursing Home in Germantown and collected food for the food pantry at the Germantown United Methodist Church.

Improving sight is a key goal for the Lions. In 1925 Helen Keller challenged the organization to become “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.” As a result, the Germantown Lions purchased eyeglasses for Valley View students who could not afford them.

Collection boxes for used eyeglasses can be found In Germantown at Brown’s Cleaners, First National Bank of Germantown, Germantown IGA, Kuhn’s Ace Hardware, Valley View Chiropractic Clinic and Dr. Tschanz’s optometric office. In Farmersville, they’re located at the Mug & Brush Barber Shop and Jerry’s Meat Market.
