Greene County news: Group to discuss Fairborn park


New park focus of program June 6

B-W Greenway Community Land Trust’s Sense of Place Program will provide an informative discussion about Fairborn’s newest park, Valle View Reserve, at 6 p.m. June 6 at the library.

The program will review how Valle View Reserve came to be, B-W Greenway’s partnership with the city of Fairborn and a photographic tour of the park, including the ¼-mile walking pathway.

Bob Jurick, one of the founding members of B-W Greenway, will lead the discussion. Jurick will discuss how the site was discovered, where funds were obtained to secure the land and the volunteer hours used on the site.

Parks & Trails hosting fish ID class

Greene County Parks & Trails will host a seminar focusing on fish of the Little Miami River beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday at Spring Lakes Park.

Participants will learn the differences between such fish species as a Bluntnose Minnow and Creek Chub, as well as a Redear Sunfish from a Pumpkinseed Sunfish.

A wide variety of native fish species will be identified. The program is free, but donations are accepted.

Friends of Xenia Station hosting event

The Friends of Xenia Station will be hosting an event Saturday at Xenia Station, 150 S. Miami Avenue, to celebrate National Trails Day and 100 years of the National Park Service.

Festivities will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., regardless of weather.

Amateur radio operators who are associated with FOXS will demonstrate a National Parks on the Air amateur radio station at Xenia Station. The Railroad Museum and the Caboose will all be open for touring. There will be a hot dog vendor on site.

Visitors will be able to pick up walking and bicycling trail maps and information about other activities. There will be free snacks and giveaways, while they last, and FOXS merchandise for purchase.

Bridge closing for about two months

The bridget on Lower Bellbrook Road in the township will be closed beginning Monday for approximately 60 days as part of the 2016 Greene County Bridge Maintenance Project. The closure will only be at the bridge that is located between SR 725 and Little Miami Drive. STAFF REPORT
