Hamilton Twp. and Maineville consider shared police services

Grants will pay for a study of the public safety issue.

Hamilton Twp. and Maineville have been given the go-ahead to move forward with grant applications for a shared police services feasibility study.

Township trustees last week authorized Administrator Gary Boeres to move forward with the process. The village council also approved the measure.

The neighboring governments are collaborating in an Ohio redevelopment program known as Local Government Innovation Fund established to provide financial assistance to political subdivisions for planning and implementing projects. Through this program, the Ohio Department of Development seeks to promote efficiency, collaboration, merger and shared services among local governments.

LGIF-approved projects also are expected to facilitate improved business environments and promote community attraction, according to the Ohio program.

“We did approve it and now it will go back to the township for their approval and to draw it all up to be signed by everyone,” said Maineville Mayor William Shearer. “This is for an application for funds for shared police services. The application will go to CDS Associates (village engineers) to do the study to see if we qualify.”

Shearer said the study would be conducted for the village at no cost and CDS would file the application. If the grant is awarded, CDS would be paid for services from the awarded funds, he said.

According to the Ohio LGIF program, award amounts for applicants with collaborative partners are limited to $100,000 per applicant and $100,000 for each collaborative partner up to $500,000. Grant funds are awarded biannually and loan funds are awarded quarterly through a competitive and open selection process, according to the Ohio program.
