A few hours after the two men arrested in the incident pleaded not guilty, the victim agreed to recount his ordeal to this news organization.
The man said he was giving himself a haircut Sunday evening when the invaders came into his home. He had not locked the front door.
“As I stood there, two men jumped me,” he said. “I didn’t see them coming into my house. We got into a bit of a scuffle and all of a sudden I got clubbed.”
He said he remembers being bound with Duct tape. The interlopers stole some of his guns and his van. There are things that went on that he said he doesn’t want to talk about because he doesn’t want to jeopardize the criminal case.
He called 9-1-1 after working himself free, telling the operator he thought he was hit in the head with a flashlight.
Monday night, he said, “I didn’t see what they hit me with.”
All he can remember is the pain coming from his head as the assailants left his home. He said he doesn’t recall how long the ordeal lasted, but “it wasn’t too awful long.”
He was given a CAT scan at a hospital because of the blow to his head.
In the aftermath of what happened, he said plainly, “a lot of people that think they’re going to commit this crime had better think again because it’s very serious when you come into a person’s home and do that kind of thing. I just think they oughta stay the heck out of our homes.”
About the Accused
The accused, 55-year old Carl Davis and 51-year-old Shay Wooley, remain in the Miami County Jail on charges of aggravated burglary, kidnapping, aggravated robbery, having weapons as felons and two counts of theft.
The home invasion was reported on Kyle Drive. Police said the men assaulted the resident and tied him up using Duct tape before stealing a 9mm and Magnum handguns and the man’s van.
Police arrested Davis and Wooley after finding the stolen van in the parking lot of a convenience store, in the 1100 block of North Main Street in Dayton about 7 p.m. Sunday, about an hour after the attack.
Monday, a judge in Miami County Municipal Court set each man’s bond at $330,000.
The victim told police he didn’t know either suspect.
About the Criminal Case
“What’s interesting and disturbing about this case is that this was a random act,” Tipp City Police Detective Chris Graham said. “There was no connection between the victim and the defendants.”
Detectives said the suspects live within walking distance of the victim and they are calling the crime one of opportunity.
Detectives said they believe the crime was committed because of drugs.
