Hope Hotel fire at Wright-Patterson contained to roof

UPDATE @ 11:35 p.m.: The fire that broke out at the Hope Hotel was contained to the roof and the continuing investigation shows that the facility is being renovated, and that tar paper and Styrofoam board for the new roof caught fire, said Tracy Young, deputy fire chief, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

A Fairborn fire crew, returning from another call, saw the flames on the roof, Young said, and that crew worked with the base crew in quickly putting out the “large volume of fire” on the roof above Packy’s Sports Bar & Grille at the Hope Hotel & Richard C. Holbrooke Conference Center near Gate 12A.

No fire got into the building, but a light haze of smoke was carrying to the sports bar through the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, Young said.

He said an estimated 70 occupants in the hotel and about 20 or so in Packy’s were evacuated. There were no injuries.

UPDATE @ 9:30 p.m.: The fire at the Hope Hotel is out.

We’re hearing from hotel patrons who said they began smelling smoke and saw smoke coming through the ceiling of a bar in the facility.

UPDATE @ 9:20 p.m.: Materials being used to apply fresh tar to the roof of the Hope Hotel may have overheated and caught fire, according to the preliminary report from Daryl Mayer, 88th Air Base Wing public affairs spokesman.

He said crews have been working on the roof the last couple of days, applying fresh tar. He said he is not certain the hotel has been evacuated, but there are no reported injuries.

Mayer described the damage as minor.
