Hot air balloon makes emergency landing

KETTERING — A hot air balloon made an emergency landing in a neighborhood here Monday evening, Aug. 24, maneuvering through tree tops and power lines.

There were no injuries or property damage after the balloon landed on Crauder Avenue after 8 p.m., Kettering Police Officer Michael Burke said.

Pilot Mike Armstrong, of Dayton, told police that weather forced him down, Burke said.

There is no investigation involved in such an incident.

Chris Thompson was grilling in his backyard when he heard a loud noise and went to investigate.

“I was cooking and I heard a sound and went to make sure it wasn’t an accident,” Thompson said. “I looked up and there was a balloon about 20 feet above the tops of my trees.”

At that point, the balloon was still in the air, and Thompson wondered how it would come down without hitting trees or lines.

About 40 neighbors stood out with cameras.

“But boy, he put it down like a surgeon, right next to the wires, right between the trees,” Thompson said. “It was quite a spectacle.”
