Larry Collins, ex-Dayton fire chief, fired in Florida

UPDATE @ 9:16 p.m.: Larry Collins was hired as head of Brevard County's fire and EMT service on Sept. 21, 2009, beating out a field of 60 applicants, according to myhometownnews.net.

As chief, he oversaw 435 firefighters and support staff and more than 250 volunteers at 33 fire stations throughout the county.

Collins spent 30 years with the Dayton Fire Department. He was hired as a firefighter in 1978 and rose to chief, a position he held for a decade before retiring on Aug. 1, 2008.

In 2013, the Rockledge, Fla., transplant was a finalist for city manager in Brunswick, Ohio. In his letter of interest in applying for that post, Collins said he wanted to move back to Ohio to be closer to family members,

FIRST REPORT: Larry Collins, a retired Dayton fire chief, has been fired as Brevard County, Fla., fire chief, spacecoastdaily.com is reporting.

His dismissal resulted from a difference of opinion with county management in the direction of the department, according to the website.

Collin, paid $104,500 a year, will receive 90 days severance pay.

He was terminated Thursday morning.
