Man arrested after girl, 11, wounded in Christmas Day shooting in Cincinnati

A man was arrested for his involvement in a shootout where an 11-year-old girl was caught in the crossfire during a Christmas Day in West Price Hill, according to police.

According to court documents obtained by our news partner WCPO-TV, police arrested 18-year-old Brian Castro in relation to the shooting. It is not clear if police are looking for other shooters at this time.

The shooting took place about 12:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of Gilsey Avenue, one block west of Elder High School.

A neighbor told WCPO that a man in a red hoodie shot at a BMW, and a man in the car shot back, hitting the girl. A stray bullet struck the girl in her buttocks, and her injury is not considered life-threatening, police said.

Police Lt. Steve Saunders said they are looking for a "gray BMW with tinted windows and plastic over the rear passenger-side window." There were three men in the car at the time, Saunders said.

After police arrived, they brought two men out of a house with their hands up. One was detained and questioned as a person of interest, Saunders said.

Saunders said police were alerted by ShotSpotter that several rounds had been fired. The back window of a parked vehicle was shot out, and multiple bullet casings were found.

The neighbor called the girl's shooting "a terrible, terrible thing." She was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital for treatment.

"Our neighborhood's pretty shook up," he said. "I've been around about a year and a half and we've never had problems like this.

"But it is Price Hill, you know. Christmas and New Year's Eve, we hear a lot of gunshots.

"There's families out here. It's Christmas, man. This little girl is going to suffer and so is her family," he said.

A judge will arraign Castro in a Hamilton County court Thursday morning.

Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at (513) 352-3040.
