Firefighters said a man suffered second- and third-degree burns to around 70 percent of his body while using an accelerant to work on a tire.
Crews were dispatched to a home in the 1600 block of Huffman Avenue in Dayton around 10 a.m. on reports of a burn victim.
Dayton Fire District Chief James Rose said it appears the man was attempting to either inflate a tire or seal the tire to a wheel by applying an accelerant and igniting it. Rose said this caused an explosion, and critically injured the man, who suffered severe burns to 70 percent of his body.
“[This practice] can result in a disaster, and quickly, without warning, and that’s what happened here it appears,” Rose said.
“We would advise nobody to try this practice, even in an emergency situation to repair a flat tire.”
