Massive flames destroy two vacant houses

UPDATE @ 7:20 a.m.: Fire crews said this section of Wayne Avenue will be closed until about 10 a.m. after the fire destroyed two vacant houses.

The flames apparently started at 1800 Wayne Avenue and the house collapsed within about a minute of crews arriving on scene, firefighters said.

They have called Vectren to the scene, and they are investigating whether the gas fed the fire. The rubble is still burning there.

Fire crews also said they have requested emergency demolition at 1804 because of the structure is not sound and the roof has collapsed.

FIRST REPORT: Crews are on the scene of a massive fire that destroyed two vacant houses on Wayne Avenue.

According to initial reports, firefighters entered one of the houses to put out the flames. But the fire was so much that they backed out of the structure and are fighting it defensively.

It started around 4:40 a.m. in the 1800 block of Wayne. The road is closed there.

It has caused a lot of smoke in the area.

Firefighters have called an investigator to the scene.

They also called for emergency demolition of one of the homes, according to initial reports.
