McLin, other area Dems endorse Fisher in senate bid

DAYTON — Dayton Mayor Rhine McLin and several other area Democrats on Friday, Sept. 25, endorsed Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher in his bid to become a U.S. senator.

Fisher and Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner are vying for the Democratic nomination to run for the seat being vacated by Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, in 2010.

Former U.S. Rep. Rob Portman and Cleveland auto dealer Tom Ganley are seeking the Republican nomination.

Fisher is endorsed by all three Montgomery County commissioners, county Auditor Karl Keith, Treasurer Carolyn Rice, Dayton City Commissioners Nan Whaley and Matt Joseph, Dayton School Board member Ron Lee and State Rep. Roland Winburn, D-Harrison Twp. Most joined him on Friday at The Entrepreneurs Center in Dayton.

McLin said Fisher has worked hard to bring money to Dayton for projects like Tech Town and has been a champion for urban issues statewide.

“He understands Ohioans and Dayton,” McLin said.

Fisher said it is important that government live within its means while investing in the future, such as funding for education and alternative energy. He cited the choice of the Dayton area as the state’s aerospace hub and said that will be followed by resources to attract and retain jobs.

He denounced as “silly and outrageous” claims by Republican members of the Ohio House who earlier this week said Democrats had failed to focus on jobs.
