Coronavirus: Miami students tested for virus and awaiting results

UPDATE @ 12:20 p.m. (Feb. 1)

The Butler County General Health District reported that as of 10:30 a.m. this morning, the test results had not yet been announced.

They announced on Twitter that the CDC had not yet released the results. There is no word yet at this time when the results will be available.

EARLIER REPORT (Jan. 29)

Ohio and Butler County health officials are continuing to wait for results for two Miami University students tested for the new coronavirus, but until then they are in a “holding pattern.”

Officials expect test results for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between 24 and 48 hours of the CDC receiving three samples — a blood draw, nasal swab and respiratory sample — from the students who had recently returned from China, said Melanie Amato, spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Health, this afternoon.

Amato said the samples were overnighted to the CDC and expected to be received this morning.

One of the students visited Miami’s student health service on Monday with flu-like symptoms. Because of those symptoms and the fact that the student and another student had recently returned from China, samples were taken from both for tested.

They are isolated in their off-campus residence, and Butler County General Health District officials are continuing to check in with them, Amato said.

The two Oxford campus students are the first to be tested for the virus in Ohio, officials said.
