Middletown banker recalled as family patriarch

MIDDLETOWN — It’s fittingly, his daughters said, that Robert “Bobby” Millan died Feb. 18 in his bed, surrounded by his family after a brief illness.

Millan, 94, loved his family, and some of his most cherished moments came during family swimming parties at his home on Thorn Hill Lane.

“He was the patriarch of our family,” said Beth Millan, one of his three daughters. “He was the glue that held our families together.”

Another daughter, Cinda Goforth added: “We lost our heart.”

Goforth said whenever there was a holiday, her parents insisted on hosting a party, even when the family size extended more than 45. She called the home “a great gathering place.”

Millan, a 1933 Middletown High School graduate, served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946. He served as president, chairman of the board and chief executive officer for First National Bank of Middletown from 1973 to 1980 and for six years as chairman of the board of First National Bank of Southwestern Ohio.

He dedicated most of his adult life to civic activities. For 20 years, he served on the board for the Middletown Hospital Association, the American Red Cross and the Middletown Public Library.

Carol J. Turner, president and CEO of Atrium Medical Center, called Millan a “pillar of the Middletown community” and said his contributions as a member of the board “helped frame the growth and direction of the health system for many years.”

He was a member of the Middletown Chamber of Commerce Board, the Miami University Middletown Campus Steering Committee and Middletown Giant Step. He was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eugenie (Gardner) Millan, to whom he was married for 70 years.

Memorial service will be at noon Friday at Church of the Ascension, 2709 McGee Ave., with the Revs. Jackie Matisse and Elaine Caldbeck officiating.
