Nickslibrary.com provides waiting room reading

Author Nick Sabatino, 93, of Dayton, is providing patients across the Miami Valley with a bit of variety in their waiting room literature. Sabatino provides doctors with opportunity to purchase customized binders of his short stories in manuscript form and has also given them permission to make free copies of stories for their patients.

What kind of stories will patients find when they open the binder? "To date I have written approximately 120 imaginative, quick-read books. During my retirement I wrote and illustrated four children's books," Sabatino said. "Two were published, 'The Tiny Donut with a Big Heart' and 'Paint Stripes Stop Traffic Dead'. I was diagnosed with macular degeneration and was unable to illustrate any longer. Rather than give up because I couldn't illustrate, I started writing books for all ages.

My book, ‘The Turtle and the Doctor’ is fiction but based on a real happening. It is about Dr. Samia Borchers’s turtle that she raised from a baby. It found a way to leave the house and go see the world until a motorist found him and took him back home.”

How did you come up the idea to allow doctors to make free copies of your stories for their patients? "It started when Dr. Samia Borchers, bought a binder filled with books. It became popular with her patients and we don't know how many books she has given out, but she continually tells us how much the patients love the stories. One of the nurses that works with Dr. Borchers told us that sometimes when they call the patient in to the see the doctor they act upset because haven't finished the story they were reading and it is all in good humor."
