Ohio public workers seeking retirement hit record amounts

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Several retirement systems for public

workers in Ohio are seeing increases in retirement applications as

experienced employees seek to leave amid a political climate that

many of them view as unfavorable.

An official from the School Employees Retirement System of Ohio

says it doesn't track why people retire, but it appears to be a

"perfect storm" as baby boomers hit retirement age and state

officials work to limit employees' collective bargaining rights and

make pension changes.

The Columbus Dispatch reports three of Ohio's retirement systems

for public workers have set records for retirement applications.

The totals increased 10 percent in the past year for teachers, 24

percent for other school workers, 50 percent for the State Highway

patrol and 35 percent for workers in the Public Employees

Retirement System.
