DAYTON — The Oregon Arts District is proving that the arts can start economic revitalization, according to the initiative’s supporters.

The effort launched in February 2008 has attracted nearly $5 million in public and private investment, created more than 100 full- and part-time jobs at new arts district businesses, and filled empty storefronts along downtown’s East Fifth Street with art galleries.

“It shows that we can start a comeback,” said Dr. Michael Ervin, the philanthropist who invested $250,000 to add an arts identity to the entertainment district better known for its restaurants and bars.

The city of Dayton has invested $1.4 million for parking and streetscape improvements. A $184,000 lighting project will be completed by November.

Bob Mendenhall, co-owner of Blind Bob’s at 430 E. Fifth St., has seen increased foot traffic in the district in the last two years. “I’m seeing more people down there and as a result I’m seeing some better sales,” Mendenhall said.
