DAYTON — The Combined Agency OVI Task Force of Montgomery County will operate a sobriety checkpoint tonight in Dayton.

The checkpoint begins at 9 p.m. in the area of North Keowee and Leo streets. State law requires law enforcement to announce the location of checkpoints ahead of time.

The OVI checkpoint and enhanced patrols are an effort of law enforcement agencies to deter and to apprehend impaired drivers, according to an OVI task force news release. Dayton Police Department officers and officers from the combined agency task force will conduct a roadside check of drivers for alcohol and drug impairment.

There were 596 alcohol-related crashes in Montgomery County in 2016. Those crashes killed 14 people and injured 273. The majority of the deadliest crashes occur on weekends, according to the task force.
