it’s connected to the chill we’ll feel this week.
Wirdzek said the polar vortex isn’t “coming back” this week, it is already there, and it won’t be moving from its spot near the north pole.
“The polar vortex is a misunderstood weather term or phenomena,” said Wirdzek. “Many think of it as a big storm, but the truth is, it’s a simple upper level weather pattern that hangs out near the north pole and Canada 365 days a year.”
Wirdzek said it’s nothing to fear, it’s always there.
“It influences arctic air to make it even colder,” said Wirdzek, “and with the help of other weather variables, some of that air spills south into the States as a good old fashioned arctic blast.”
This is the same cycle that gives us our winter.
“Once every few decades,” said Wirdzek, “the polar vortex will shift, but it won’t actually come visit us here.”
“The slight shift, however, can lead to a massive spilling of that arctic air underneath the vortex to head south. This happened last January,” said Wirdzek.
