Pool attendance up in Tipp City

TIPP CITY — A good financial year is needed at the Tippecanoe Family Aquatic Center after two years of less-than-average summers due to uncooperative weather.

So far, the financial news is very good, City Manager Jon Crusey has reported in his weekly updates to the City Council.

As of July 2 and after five weeks of business, total attendance has increased 22 percent since last year and is on pace with the average for the first five years of operations.

Daily fee attendance has increased 53 percent since last year and total revenue has increased 20 percent since 2009 and 12 percent since the average revenue of the first five years.

As might be expected with more attendance, concession revenue has increased, at 29 percent since last year, and 33 percent during the average for the first five years, Crusey said.

“The weather has been outstanding so far this summer, and I attribute much early success to that,” he said.

Crusey said the city does not track daily fee visitors by zip code so it would be difficult to say if the closing of Huber Heights’ pool has had an effect on attendance.

The city took measures this year to reduce operating costs. The pool will close when school starts in August. Special events at the center were eliminated.

“It is very important to have a successful year at the aquatic center to relieve pressure on an already stressed general fund budget,” Crusey said.

The city contracts with Dayton Pool Management to run the Tippecanoe Family Aquatic Center.

At the Troy Aquatic Center, 2010 also has been better so far than in 2009.

Recreation Director Ken Siler said 2010 attendance as of July 8 was 21,306, compared to 19,023 for the same period in 2009. Daily fee and concession revenues were at $80,439, an increase from $64,871 in 2009.

The city runs the Troy Aquatic Center inhouse.
