Propane supplies low in part from large corn harvest

Local propane distributors are working to fill demand after Gov. John Kasich declared a state of emergency on propane gas supplies.

There's not a shortage of propane supply in the country, but the prolonged cold temperatures have depleted supplies in primarily rural areas, according to a statement Monday by the Ohio Propane Gas Association.

Kasich's declaration is a regional order that waives restrictions on transporting propane and heating oil in 10 Midwest states, according to OPGA.

The state propane association said the local shortage is in part due to the large corn harvest in the fall.

"Ordinarily, the harvest progresses in stages through the region but in late 2013, the harvests happened at the same time over a wide area," according to OPGA. "This was a large, wet crop which required massive amounts of propane in order to be dried prior to storage."
