Raid at Trader's World nets 1,000 counterfeit products

MONROE — More than 1,000 counterfeit products were seized by Monroe police this past weekend during a raid at Trader s World.

The Monroe Police Department on Saturday performed the counterfeit product compliance checks, or undercover buys, at nine booths for counterfeit Fox and Monster branded merchandise on April 23, said Monroe police Detective Ken Parson. On Saturday, police “acted on that information,” he said.

In total, 695 Fox branded items, 294 Monster branded items and 351 co-branded items — including shirts, hats, jewelry and decals — were seized, he said.

Five of the nine booths were served with cease and desist orders by Fox and Monster in December 2010, Parson said. Police received a complaint from the brand companies, and worked in conjunction with a private investigation firm contracted by Fox and Monster, he said.

No arrests were made at the time of the raid, but charges were filed against the 10 booth owners — including a husband and wife who co-owned one booth, and one employee — in Lebanon Municipal Court Tuesday.

Musa Mbye, Tracy Roll, Dwayne Williams, Davena Williams, Jeff Baker, Niane Samba, Mark Malicote, Walter Ruiz, Awa Diop, George Tasseff and Momar Diallo were all charged with Trademark Counterfeiting.

The charge varies on possible punishment if convicted. If the booth had less than 100 counterfeit items, the charge is a misdemeanor and carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. If the booth had more than 100 items, the charge is a felony, Parson said.

Parson said the department receives “a lot” of counterfeit product complaints in reference to Trader s World.

The seized items will be destroyed once the case is closed, he said.
