With Christmas here and gone, the time for gift returns has arrived.

While malls and shopping centers are back to their normal hours after the holidays, shoppers can expect busy lines as people return ill-fitting or unwanted gifts.

News Center 7’s Letitia Perry shared tips and tricks to make any gift returns as smooth as possible, such as knowing what merchandise credit is or knowing if you can return something without a receipt.

John North of the Better Business Bureau said that stores are not legally required to take merchandise back after purchase. While it is many stores’ policy to take back merchandise, they are not legally required to do so.

Perry advised that anyone looking to return gifts should read the store’s policy before returning an item so shoppers will know what to expect.
