Rick Springfield to bring his Stripped Down tour to Clark State

He set the charts on fire as one of pop music’s premiere hit makers in the 1980s, including his No. 1 smash hit “Jessie’s Girl.”

While he and Jessie may no longer be friends, Grammy Award-winning rocker Rick Springfield should feel the love in the town that bears his name on Valentine’s Day 2017.

The Clark State Performing Arts Center announced Thursday that Springfield will bring his Stripped Down tour to Kuss Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14.

Tickets go on sale Tuesday, Dec. 15, at www.ticketmaster.com and cost $40 to $105.

Clark State Performing Arts Center Executive Director Adele Adkins said she’s been trying to land Springfield for more than a year and the timing couldn’t have been better.

“Rick has had a huge resurgence the past few years,” she said. “He sells out everywhere he’s been going and has a devoted fan base. Getting him for Valentine’s Day was a perfect fit.”

Although rocking for years before, Springfield hit the big time in 1981 with “Jessie’s Girl” and registered 17 Top 40 hits, rising along with the MTV phenomenon and recording multiple platinum and gold records. He was known at the time as well for his role on the soap “General Hospital.”

He could have easily coasted on his hits, but Springfield continues to release new material such as his 2016 CD “Rocket Science” and works with rockers including Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Nirvana fame.

Springfield is also known for his television and movie work. He starred in a recent film alongside Meryl Streep and has a recurring role on the CW hit series “Supernatural.”

The Stripped Down shows are similar to MTV Unplugged, with just Springfield solo, singing some of his favorite hits while telling stories and even doing a question-and-answer session with the audience.

“A solo acoustic show is perfect for a venue of our size,” Adkins said. “He wants to play smaller, more intimate venues. I’ve been doing this for 20 years and I can’t think of another headliner at this level who does question and answers with his audiences.”

Adkins tries to add shows such as this when there are openings in a performer’s tour and it works into the Performing Arts Center’s schedule.

She said to look for an additional show in April to be announced in the coming weeks.
