Scholarship gets new name

A Troy-based scholarship program has a new name, but the same purpose. The Citizens Scholarship Foundation of Troy, or Troy Dollars for Scholars, is now Troy Dollars for College.

The organization provides scholarships for graduating seniors who reside in Troy and plan to attend two- or four-year colleges. Applications are scored anonymously with points received for a variety of factors such as financial need, GPA, activities, work and ACT/SAT scores.

The name change to Troy Dollars for College followed the Troy Dollars for Scholars’ board decision last year to disaffiliate with the national organization known as Scholarship America. Several factors were involved in the local board’s decision, including concerns that money donated locally should remain local, said Jennifer Walters, local board president. Troy Dollars for College now operates under The Troy Foundation as a 501(c)(3).

The organization will continue to hold its annual mail campaign in the spring and award scholarships at graduation. NANCY BOWMAN, CONTRIBUTING WRITER
