UPDATE @ 4:12 p.m. (Feb. 15)

The preliminary cause of death was asphyxiation by hanging, said Miami County Sheriff Dave Duchak.

Gambill had requested the single cell because of issues he had been experiencing with alcohol withdrawal, he said.

The death of an inmate at the Miami County Jail early Thursday morning is being investigated as a suicide, according to Sheriff Dave Duchak.

Resuscitation efforts attempted by jail staff and paramedics were unsuccessful.

Gambill was booked into jail on Feb. 10 on charges stemming from a domestic incident where he fired shots during an argument with family members, Duchak said. Gambill was charged with five counts of felonious assault and five counts of domestic violence and initially appeared in court on Monday.

The death investigation will be conducted by the sheriff’s department and an autopsy will be completed by the Miami County Coroner’s Office.

Investigators said there was no evidence of foul play.
