OXFORD — Those who are eager to celebrate their national pride will not have to wait until the Fourth of July this year.
The Miami University department of music and the School of Fine Arts will present their Grand Night for Singing performance, “The Great American Songbook,” at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at Hall Auditorium.
The show, which will feature the music from some of America’s most cherished musicals and movies, will be performed by more than 100 Miami musicians.
“It’s a tremendously talented group,” said Ben Smolder, the shows director.
Rather than consisting of solely music majors, this year’s show will be performed by students from a wide range of majors.
Guest artists will include Gregory Turay, one of the leading tenors from the metropolitan opera in New York City, as well as Tedrin Blair Lindsey, Audrey Luna, and Andrea Ridilla.
Featuring tons of dancing and choreography, this is not a “sing and stand” kind of production, said producer Mari Opatz-Muni of the “semi-staged production.”
Smolder said that the show’s debut last year, proved to be a great success.
According to Smolder, the American Songbook consists of music that was written from 1920 to 1960 for Broadway and Hollywood.
“It really is truly American in its art form,” he said. “This music is full of optimism.”
In particular, he feels that “Over the Rainbow,” from The Wizard of Oz will be a highlight.
The show consists of two acts. The first act will feature mainly upbeat songs. The second act, which will include songs by Stephen Sondheim, will be a little more reflective.
However, Opatz-Muni said the act will also feature plenty of lively and energetic songs.
Although tickets can be purchased at the door, it is recommended that they be purchased in advance by calling the Miami University Box office at (513) 529-3200. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.grandnight.info.
