Space to nearly double at Miami Twp. library branch

The renovation is part of Dayton Metro Library’s systemwide $187 million building project.

Construction on the $5.36 million renovation of the Miami Twp. Library is nearly half completed.

The renovation is part of Dayton Metro Library’s $187 million plan to renovate and expand five library branches and create 11 new buildings.

“We are really excited to be offering this to the community,” Cheryl Wirtley, Miami Twp. branch manager said. “We will be able to increase our education programs, host more study groups, and pursue more partnerships.”

The expansion will almost double the size of the Miami Twp. branch, adding 9,000 square feet to the existing 9,845 square- foot structure. The extra space will allow the library to expand its computer, study, and children’s areas and allow for brand new study and meeting rooms.

“The way we are now, we don’t have the space to accommodate enough people for classes or group meetings,” Wirtley said.

Residents—around 300-400 each day— have continued to visit the library despite the noise and disturbance from the construction.

“It’s loud, but it should be really nice when it’s done,” Kyla Miller, a Miami Twp. student, said

Miller visits the library about once a month to study and do homework but said she will come more often once they have the study rooms complete.

Work on the Miami Twp. library is expected to be done in September.

The Metro Library building project is divided into four segments.

The project began in 2014 with the E.C Doren branch which was finished Jan. 3 and is expected to be completed with the final segment in 2017.

Other branches listed in the first segment are under construction and include:

Other work in the first segment include rebuilding the Main Library and adding onto it. Work on the addition has started. Metro will operate a temporary Main Library out of the Operations Center, the former Hauer Building on South Patterson Boulevard, during the construction. The Operations Center is scheduled to open in June. The new Main Library is scheduled to open in Summer 2016.

The new Northwest Branch, which will consolidate the Dayton View, Fort McKinley, and Northtown-Shiloh branches and located at Philadelphia Drive and Hillcrest Avenue, is scheduled to open in January 2016.

Segment two begins in November with the construction of the new Miamisburg branch.

“We feel fortunate we can continue to offer opportunities without much interruption or inconvenience to our patrons,” Brielle Maynor, Miamisbury branch manager, said.

Dayton Metro Library and Miamisburg City Schools are still finalizing details for the library location on the corner of Sixth Street and Linden Avenue, , Metro Dayton Community Engagement Manager, Jayne Klose, Dayton Metro Library community engagement manager, said.

The second segment also includes new construction or expansion at the Brookville, Kettering-Moraine, New Lebanon, Vandalia and West Dayton branches.

“All projects except the West branch are in the design phase with specific construction dates scheduled to start in the third or fourth quarter of this year,” Klose said.

Metro is nearing a decision on the West branch and design work will start as soon as the site is finalized, Klose said.

Segments three and four include East Dayton/Riverside, Huber Heights, Northmont, Southeast Dayton, Trotwood, West Carrollton and Wilmington-Stroop branches. All will begin the design phase toward the end of this year, according to Klose.
