Students to sell ornaments

LEBANON — The 450 fourth-graders at Donovan Elementary School, and their art teacher, are helping out Big Brothers Big Sisters of Warren and Clinton Counties this holiday season.

Art teacher Amy Brewer, who is also Lebanon’s mayor, said each fourth-grader at the elementary school made an ornament to support the youth mentoring organization that comes to Donovan on a regular basis. All proceeds go to Big Brothers Big Sisters.

“We want to give them what they have given to our school,” Brewer said about Big Brothers Big Sisters of Warren and Clinton Counties. “It shows them that we as a community also support the program and know how valuable it is for our youth.”

The fourth-graders each made a Christmas ornament made from a CD — all of which include a label that reads “Created With Love By Donovan Elementary 4th Grade Art Classes” — that will be sold at several locations, including Great Wolf Lodge and Manna Cupcake Cafe. They are also being sold at the Dec. 7 Donovan Elementary Art Fair.

“We’re always looking to trying to teach our students the importance of community service,” Brewer said. “(We stress) the importance of not thinking about themselves but doing something for somebody else.”

Tammy Stebelton, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Warren and Clinton Counties, said they’re excited about the project

“And people love homemade ornaments especially when they’re made by children,” she said.

Warren County Career Center students made the labels for, packaged and are marketing the ornaments.

Max Combs, 9, a Donovan Elementary fourth-grader said while it’s “pretty sad” there are kids who need the support of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, he thinks it’s great they are around for those kids.

“I like to do it because it helps other people and I like helping other people,” he said of why he wanted to make his ornament.

The ornaments will be featured on Dec. 3 at the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Great Wolf Lodge. It starts at 6:30 p.m.
