Success starts with attendance

Fairborn Schools

David Scarberry

A very important part of our academic success is attendance. I encourage all of our families to make sure that your children are attending school every day. Why is this important? A child cannot learn if he or she is not at school. There is a strong link between successful learning and regular attendance. Most importantly, the time a child spends “on task” on a daily basis is needed to learn and key academic concepts are covered every day. One missed day can take as many as three days to learn. Regular attendance will help our children receive the best possible education.

• Fairborn Primary School recently had a visit from Frances Strickland, Gov. Ted Strickland’s wife. Strickland saw the Good Behavior Game and observed several classrooms. Nancy McMahan, Ernie Sheeler and Eric Combs assisted with the visit. Classroom teachers Mary Galloway, Jamie Bevington, Sherry Smith and Stacey Frey opened their classrooms during the visit.

• Fairborn High School continues to provide excellent opportunities for high school students. MIT will be providing a seminar for girls presented by female engineers. Fairborn leads the Miami Valley with outstanding programs in engineering, biomedical science and advanced placement courses in chemistry, calculus, government, language arts and biology. These academic programs will provide our youth with the knowledge they need for tomorrow’s jobs.

• The Fairborn Board of Education met with the Fairborn City Council at a joint meeting. With improved code enforcement and new business and residential development, the city is committed to the future and to Fairborn City Schools. The school district shared information about finances, academics and the Ohio School Facilities Commission process. The community and school leadership realizes that our future success lies in working together to benefit the Fairborn community.
